Russia Invades Ukraine, Will China Invade Taiwan?

Russia’s unprovocative invasion of Ukraine begs whether China is planning an invasion of Taiwan. The fear was reflected in a statement by Boris Johnson at a security conference in Munich. He said, “If Ukraine is endangered, the shock will echo around the world. And those echoes will be heard in east Asia, will be heard in Taiwan.”

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson said, “Taiwan is not Ukraine in response to the British prime minister. Taiwan has always been an inalienable part of China. This is an indisputable legal and historical fact.” Thereby dismissing any such connections.

Although it seems unlikely that China will conduct a full-scale invasion of Taiwan, the independent island country has been raising concerns for the last two years. On the 23rd of January, China conducted a fly-by consisting of 39 jets over Taiwan. Since then, China has been recurrently flying over Taiwan with fever aircrafts- Reuters reported. Consequently, the Taiwanese government has been on a high alert.

Russia has been rather unmoved by the global response as it is yet to stop its invasion. Sanctions by NATO and America could not deter Russia. Similarly, any plans to invade Taiwan would not be deterred by sanctions or mere condemnation. The supremely powered nuclear country can invade Taiwan in a blink of an eye. However, the real worry has always been the suffering war brings; small countries like Ukraine and Taiwan would suffer in a war that is not entirely their making.

For now, China must wait and watch the consequences Russia faces. However, China would surely test its waters if the Global response to the Ukrainian invasion is not befitting. And unfortunately, Russia seems to be doing just fine and has not been moved much by the global condemnation.  Will watch and see over the next few weeks.
