Putin Issues a Nuclear Alert Amid Escalating Tensions

On Feb 27, 2022, Vladimir V. Putin issued a nuclear alert and declared that his nukes were in a special combat readiness mode. The nuclear threat came as a consequence of a possible intervention by the United States and NATO. Although Russia seems to move on with its plans, America and its allies have emphasized the need to de-escalate the war.

So far, America and its allies have failed to come up with the expectations of Ukraine. The Ukrainian opposition to Russia was a consequence of the promises made by NATO and America. Such as the possible inclusion of Ukraine into NATO. However, as much as NATO or America wants to support Ukraine, the military intervention would only worsen the tensions.

Amid the war, the Ukrainian authorities seek a ceasefire and a possible withdrawal of troops by Russia. Bilateral talks are underway, and the office of Ukraine’s president said that a delegation would meet Russian officials in Moscow in the coming days.

While issuing a nuclear alert, Putin cited statements coming from major NATO members and America. Moreover, he referred to the financial sanctions imposed by the west on Russia and Putin.
The nuclear directive can be seen as a deterrent. In contrast, the US ambassador denounced the act by saying, “President Putin is continuing to escalate this war in a manner that is totally unacceptable, and we have to continue to condemn his actions in the strongest possible way.”

As Russia advances into the Ukrainian territories, Putin’s plans are unclear. In comparison, western officials believe that he is determined to overthrow the Ukrainian government and replace it with a new setup. However, it is crystal clear that Russia aims to retain its influence in the region.
